  1. 1826-1898. French Symbolist painter. His
  2. works are atmospheric biblical, mythological,
  3. and literary scenes, richly coloured and
  4. detailed, for example Salome Dancing Before
  5. Herod 1876. In the 1890s Moreau taught at the
  6. Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his
  7. pupils included Matisse and Rouault. Much of
  8. his work is in the Musee Moreau, Paris.
